Magical Millcreek Retreat

By Julie Roberts

Are you looking for a mountain getaway that is only minutes away from the heart of the city? If so, this beautiful rambler, located at the mouth of Millcreek Canyon in a quiet cul-de-sac, is the perfect place for you. First of all, the home’s location is ideal. You have tremendous views of Mount Olympus, and you are only five minutes away from the university, ten minutes away from downtown Salt Lake City, and fifteen minutes away from the airport. You can easily walk to grocery stores and restaurants.

And then there’s the house itself, which is stunning—it is 5,000 square feet in size, and it has been meticulously remodeled and maintained. The owners of the home, Jack and Cheryl Andrews, have invested over $400,000 in improving the home, and they haven’t forgotten any details, including a double hardwood floor with tongue-in-groove oak, craftsman-created pocket doors, and an energy-efficient double roof with unique metal shingling.

But this house has another incredible feature: the magical, unbelievable backyard. The lot size is .53 acres, with 140 feet of the Millcreek Stream forming the southern border of the grounds. The sounds and cooling effects of the river help to create the atmosphere of a peaceful mountain retreat, which the owners have enjoyed for the past 30 years. “When you get into the backyard you don’t see another residence, but you hear the water. The temperature drops maybe 15 degrees,” describes Jack Andrews.

When Jack and Cheryl purchased the home, the backyard was basically just a wide expanse of grass with a few trees. But Cheryl has transformed the setting by adding a wide array of plants and flowers, two stream-side patios, a rock fireplace, a log gazebo with a cantilevered roof, and several pathways. The garden features raspberry bushes, pear and apricot trees, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables. For visual appeal, Cheryl planted a large variety of hosta plants, which are not only lush in appearance but are easy to maintain. Vibrantly hued flowers such as snapdragons, amaranthus varieties, and purple rockcress add color to the garden and help to create an almost tropical setting. Cheryl views gardening similarly to how an artist views painting a picture—and the end result is a wonderful landscape filled with textures and colors.

Cheryl and Jack have hosted weddings and parties of up to 90 people in their expansive backyard, and the inside of the house is also ideal for entertaining guests. The home’s main level is open and spacious, with the gorgeous hardwood floors that create a warm and inviting environment. There are two office spaces, one of which is big enough to hold a conference table. As an added convenience, guests can visit the offices through a separate doorway and parking space. The home is equipped with surround sound, so the doorbell can be heard anywhere. The basement offers more options for living and entertaining, with a game room, sauna, and exercise room. Another special highlight this home offers is unlimited storage options, including a pantry, multiple storage rooms, and built-in cupboards.

This house has it all: a convenient location, an elegant and inviting interior, and a fantastic yard that looks like something right out of a storybook.
